Great Harbor Cay

14 April 2018 | Great Harbour Cay Bahamas
Sunny and winds 15-20 from the east
We had a wonderful sail from Bimini to Great Harbor Cay in the Berry Islands. We did the 84 Miles in 11.5 hours. We were sailing at 7-8 knots all day with the wind 12-15K SE about 60 degrees off the bow. The marina at gGrest Sail is really interesting with lots of history. The Rat Pack use to hangout here in the late sixties early seventies. If you google Great Harbour Cay history on Wikipedia you can find an article on it. We explored the ruins of the old club house and you could just imagine what it had been like for the rich and famous. There is also a 18 hole golf course which J Nichols was the pro but it’s all grown over and 9 holes are abandoned. The island went south when the Bahamas got their independence for England and also when the drug trade moved in in the late seventies. We biked, hiked, dinkyied and took a puddle jumper to the mainland to added Bob and Trish Diehl’s daughter Jaquelin’s wedding. We will return to continue our journey on Sunday. Bad weather is suppose to be coming in. They predict squalls with 40-50 k winds. We may be stuck in Great Harbour Cay for several days.

Various
We departed from longboat and had a good trip to pelican bay. We spent the night then did some park hiking. We then sailed down to Sanibel and anchored. We went to an old hang out that we hadn't been in 33 years The Mucky Duck. Regards to say it had changed quit a bit with lots of development around it. We went to Easter mass in the morning and then sailed down to the end of Sanibel to anchor for the nigh. The next day was a zero dark thirty to Shark River. We made the 83 miles in 12 hours 😊, and anchored out next to the shoreline so the mosquitos wouldn't eat us alive. Next day it was up early and a course set for marathon. The pots were horrid LE and required a lot of course corrections but we made it in good time and pulled into Marathon Marina at about 2P. The marina was nice and the pool great since it was so hot out. We provisioned and washed the boat down and go t her seat for next trip to the Bahamas. The first day in Marathon we hit the early bird happy hour at Lazy days. We ate for only $16 for the both of us. The next day we had the early bird special at the light house restaurant and split the special for $20. My Mom would be proud of the bargains. We departed for Bimini Thursday 10 AM with an anticipated 6Am arrival. It about 145 mile voyage. All the weather reports were wrong and I was stupid not to follow our backup plan which was to anchor to the west of Rodrigos Key. As night approached we headed out a cross the Gulf Stream the winds stayed steady from the northeast at 20-23K. Needless to say it was an extremely rough ride all night. The boat did well but the crew did not. I'll never do that again, I am too old to get tossed about. We pulled into Bimini on schedule and had to wait a little for sunup. We were able to get a slip right away at the Blue Water Marina. We spent 3 wonderful days in Bimini. Great conch salad and great hiking. We checked out south Bimini Island Sands Marina and also the hiking trail which was awesome. Finisterre is ready to go to the next stop which is the Berry Islands.

Beautiful
We have had the boat at Longboat Key for 2 months now. We have gone to Huston and also Ridge. I also made a quick trip to the UAE for work. We also got most of our DR appointments done especially Kathis quarterly check up which was good. We plan to head to the Bahamas next.

Longboat Key LBK

01 February 2018 | LBK
Clear light winds and cold 60s
We made it to the LBK. We fueled up and then tied up in our slip on L dock. We settled in and took a shower and visited Dave and Betsy Frye. We caught up on things and had a great night.

Venice/Siesta Key

31 January 2018 | Siesta Key
10k from the NE and clear and cold
Departed Sanibel and stayed on the intercostal. Went by Cabbage Key where the O'Neil's and us anchored about 26 years ago. Cabbage key had definely developed more. We had a nice day cruising north, we actually was able to go north of Venice and anchored in White Beach by Siesta Key. We are looking forward to finally arriving at Longboat Key tomorrow Morning.
