Sailing South for a change!

02 September 2009 | Hog Harbour
Bernie & Di
We departed Lakona Bay on Santa Maria early this morning with some sadness in our hearts. Up on the headland waving goodbye to use were two young families who we had come to know in our brief stay. A quick toot from our air horn echoed around the valley and we headed out to sea. We were quickly reminded as we ran into strong head winds, that we were heading south for the first time since leaving Lakes Entrance, way back in May. We intended to make Maewo Is. some 55 miles to windward, but as the day wore on we realised that we would not make the unfamiliar anchorage in daylight, so headed for Hog Harbour on Santo Is. We had been there on the journey north, so were familiar with the anchorage. We dropped our anchor at 16:00 hrs in six meters of water on a sandy patch amongst coral bommies. The water was so clear that we could see the anchor and chain all the way to the bottom. We spent a quiet night there followed by a day of exploring the area. The beaches have beautiful fine white sand highlighting the most beautiful clear water.
