Back in Georgetown
16 February 2010 | Georgetown - Great Exuma
Ralph
We left Cave Cay Sunday morning and were out of the cut and sailing on the rumbline on Exuma Sound by 8:00am. The wind was directly behind us so we tried the wind on wing again using the whisker pole and it worked good as long as wind stayed above 6 kts of apparent wind. But by 11:00 the winds died out so we took down the jib and started both of the motors, but in no time, the wind picked up off our beam and moved us along at about 5 - 6 kts. The picture on the blog is of our whisker pole in action doing wing on wing.
We set up a fishing rod and around 10:00am had one on. It was taking off line pretty good, so I tightned up the drag and I guess I tightned it up to much and it broke off. It dove deep and we never saw it, so have no clue what it was. I was very disappointed, because I think it was a fish we could have landed and it would have provided some great meals.
We are provisioning in Georgetown and are thinking of leaving on Thursday to head south to the Jumentos and try to catch up with Kokopelli and Just Dreaming. We are hoping to travel down there with Cat Tales - the other boat that was traveling with that group, who are still here in GT waiting for some mail. The most direct route is through Hog Cay cut which involves some skinny water and an intricate route that needs to be followed. Yesterday in GT, we ran into a young couple that we had meet at Sampson Cay marina - Bruce & Daniela - they were riding around on their scooter having a great time. Also yesterday, on our dingy ride back to the boat, I noticed some dark spots in the water and when we were over top of them, I could see that they were spotted eagle rays - 6 of them. We followed them around a bit and had some excellent views of these cool rays.
