More Lobster!

16 April 2010 | Pasa Cachiboca, Cuba
Ralph
We moved 13 miles further west and pulled into a great anchorage called Pasa Cahiboca. It is much nicer than the last anchorage and the holding is much better - we did not drag last night! The sail over was great - we put 1 reef in the main and we had winds in the 20 - 25 off our beam and again we flew along at 7 - 8 kts and we had the anchor down by 11:00am. After another lobster meal we headed out with Liz & Allan to see what we could find in the water. We first snorkeled around an old wreck, but the water was quite cloudy. We also poked around at the edge of the mangroves, which I found very spooky, so we moved on. We moved closer to the entrance and finally found some structure where we thought the hunting might be good. There was a long ledge with some undercuts where lobster like to hang out, but I first saw a large fish that was over 4 feet long and it must have weighted 60 or 70 lbs. Not something I am going to try and shoot, but cool to see close up. Soon Karen was yelling that she had found a lobster, just as I spotted my first one. I swam over and shot the lobster she found, dropped it in the dingy and then went back to shoot the one I spotted. The second one was the biggest I have shot and his tail alone must weigh between 1.5 and 2 lbs. We had decided 2 was enough, so I put the spear in the dingy. We spotted a couple more that Allan shot and we also found numerous conch. The snorkeling was not that great, compared to what we did in Cabo Cruz.

We are going to move on again today and head another 35 miles west. Our plan is to work our way to a place called Casalida and there is a town close by called Trinidad. They are a couple of the oldest cities in the new world according to the Calder guide. Tinidad was first settled in 1514. Once we get there we will decide if we work our way back east before heading south or head south from there.
