Day 2 of the BIG passage

04 May 2010 | Underway
Ralph
We Left Ceinfuegos at around 8:00am yesterday and had hardly any wind for the first couple of hours, which is expected because of the katabatic wind effect from the land mass. But once we got out far enough, the winds filled in at around 15kts. At around dark the winds started to slow down and we had to start the motors. They also started to back more to the south, so we had to roll in the jib. It was kind of rolly once we got into the open ocean I got a touch of seasickness, which for the conditions I was kind of surprised. I took a Stugeron and it definitely helps, but it also makes me tired. The seas settled down as the day progressed and I was fine by the afternoon.

We have very good conditions so far and according to Chris Parker, we should have good weather for the whole trip. There is the possibility of some squalls that could have some stronger wind in them and we saw some last night and this morning on the radar, but we have skirted by them all so far.

In the first 24 hours we have covered 130 miles averaging just over 5 kts. We encountered a current yesterday and we had a hard time making 4 kts with the motors running. Our course takes us around and in between a number of shoals and banks making navigation a little more difficult. Thank God for GPS or it would make navigation a nightmare. We are currently in between Grand Cayman and Little Cayman and we ONLY have 400 more miles to go. Hopefully we can make it to Providencia by Thursday. We are making around 7 kts right now and at that speed we should be able to do it.
