Day 3 of the BIG passage

We continue to plod along and are over the halfway mark. We have been traveling for 49 hours have covered 283 miles with an average speed of 5.7 kts. The winds have been in the 10 - 12 kts range and have been coming out of 120 degrees. They are supposed to back to 080 for today and tomorrow and build to 15 - 18 and that should get us moving a little faster. But it will also cause the seas to build some what. We put a reef in the main last night as a precaution - There is the possibility of squalls with winds over 30kts so we did not want to take a chance. We saw lightning a couple of times but it never cam close. You can see the squalls on the radar, so we check about every 15 minutes to see if anything is coming our way. We should arrive at Providencia Friday morning - probably in the dark, but we will either anchor or hove to outside and wait until daylight before venturing into the anchorage.
I did some calculation of Five Islands fuel consumption since we left Georgetown Bahamas. We had used the port engine for 45 hours and the starboard engine for 75 hours for a total of 120 hours. During that time we used a total of 34 gallons of fuel making the fuel consumption .28 gallons per hour/ per engine. I was extremely pleased with that and it gives us a substantial motoring range - we carry about 75 gallons of fuel. When the winds are lighter, we often motorsail (Like right now) and only use one engine. I have been using the SB engine more, as last year we added a bunch of extra hours on the port engine for running the refrigeration.
We might try fishing today - some fresh fish would be great to eat - just worried about having way too much as we don't have much room in the freezer It is also getting hotter and hotter as we head south - not a lot of clothes required. We have been doing 3 hours watches at night and it seems to working pretty good. Last year I could never sleep on an overnight passage, but am having no trouble this year. On my watch I have been listening to Pod Casts on my iPod and the time just flies by.
