On our way

13 December 2010 | Ustupu, San Blas, Panama
Ralph
We finally had a break in the weather yesterday and took advantage of it by moving about 12 miles NW up the coast. We first stopped at Isla Iguana with Salange to do some snorkeling and maybe find some food, but there were hardly any fish on the reef. The water is still cloudy from all of the rain, but we were impressed with the coral. We saw some of the largest patches of live elk coral that we have ever seen. And I saw other corals that I had never seen before. The Kuna's keep every fish they catch, even if it is only 2 inches long!

We then went to Ustupu, which is supposedly the largest settlement in the San Blas. And it is huge in comparison to anything we have seen before. There must be thousands of people living here. But again the people are very friendly and welcoming. The kids in particular are very curious. We are anchored in a big bay and there are ulu's being paddled all around us. I think they come close to check us out and wave to us. They paddle over to the mainland to tend gardens and wash clothes in the river.

Today we are going to move again up to a village called Mamitupu. It comes highly recommended by our friends on Glide, so we are looking forward to it and will probably spend a few days there.
