Like Halloween in Kuna Yala

01 February 2011 | Robeson Islands, San Blas, Panama
Ralph
We moved 15 miles yesterday to a group of islands in the Gulf of San Blas called the Robesons. We anchored behind Isla Girti - after 7 attempts to get the anchor to set. We have never had such a problem before - very frustrating. There are villages on most of the islands, even on really tiny islands and they are spilling out into the sea. I really wonder why the Kunas tend to congregate on these islands when they have so much land on the mainland. Especially at a place like this where the mainland is only a couple hundred yards away. I stayed on the boat to make sure the boat stayed put while the rest of them went in to check the village out. The couple of Kuna boats paddled out with kids in them asking for candies. I am guessing the first kids must have paddled back to the village and spread the word as soon there was a flood of boats coming out to see us. The boat in the picture was paddled by a 6 year old girl along with here 2 year old brother and 5 year old friend. And these guys had to paddle a fair distance to get here and paddle back into the wind to get back home.

Today we are going to venture up one of the rivers with the dingy's and see what we can find. The Kuna's go up the river to do their laundry, tend their farms and bring back fresh water. I am hoping we can see some crocodiles and monkeys...
