Crossing the Great Bahama Banks

26 January 2010 | Bahamas
Brian
The wind was blowing north when we woke up and decided it was time to leave Bimini and head across the Great Bahamian Bank. The weather looked good for at least a couple of days ahead and we wanted to start moving again. We moved slowly out of the Bimini harbor careful not to run aground. We sailed south towards a cut in the Banks between two Keys...Gun Key and Cat Key. As we approached the cut we realized how narrow the passage was and how strong the current as water poured off the shallow Banks. We were so close to Gun Key but we could see the bottom crystal clear. We carefully picked our way through the coral reef with our hearts in our throats. Once we were on the Banks our depth sounder only was reading 6.5 feet and we draw 5.5 feet.... so I wasn't happy. I thought 80 miles being this close to hitting the bottom was going to drive me crazy. Well, luckily the water started getting deeper and 13 feet of water seemed deep. We sailed on through the day and when night approached we decided to drop anchor in the middle of the Bank. We moved off the path other boats may be taking across the Bank and dropped anchor. We put out every light we had so others could see us if they were making a night crossing. The chop wasn't bad and we both slept through the night. In the morning the wind picked up so we pulled anchor and set sail across the rest of the Banks toward Chub Cay. Wow... what a sail... the wind was 15 knots on our beam for the whole day. We sailed straight through.... off the Banks and made Chub Cay by the afternoon.

Nancy & I have been planning to go sailing for years. We are not ready to retire but decided to take this trip before we get to old. Sailing takes a lot of energy and commitment so we didnt want to wait until we cant physically handle the trip. [...]
