Exploring Bahia Huevos

19 February 2009 | Costa Rica
Nancy
Bahia Huevos is a protected bay (even from the Papagayo winds!) that has a lot to offer even though there is no facilities or internet access! It got its name because some people say the two small islands that are at the entrance appear to look like eggs...well I guess so but it's a stretch of the imagination a bit or so.....actually something else comes to mind but its not worth mentioning! I was able to take a picture (in photo gallery) of the islands so you can decide if it looks like eggs.
At the head of the bay there is a river mouth that leads to an estuary lined with mangroves that is popular by some of nearby resorts that give tours for their guests during the day. The next day after arrival of this beautiful bay we explored the area by dinghy. We were able to go up the estuary approximately 1 and ½ miles before we came to an area were the estuary was block by fallen trees and brush. We got to see several parrots traveling in pairs, snowy egrets, kingfishers and a few other birds that I could not identify. Apparently this estuary is also known to have a crocodile or two in it but we did not have any sightings.
We were able to land the dinghy at the shell beach at the opening of the estuary to search for more shells. While we were looking for shells, across the river mouth we could see several monkeys running around on the ground along the bank. As we left shell beach to head to the other sandy beach to take a swim, we saw that the white faced monkeys (we think they maybe either be Howler or Capuchin monkeys) moved rather quickly from the ground area to the trees. It still amazes me how agile they are and how easy they make it look by crossing from tree to tree with arms, legs or tail. It was funny; we watched them watching us! They got bored first and left the area so we could not see them. It was quite hot at this point of the day, so we headed over to the other sandy beach that was between the islands and took a swim. The water is a bit cooler here but very refreshing in the heat of the day. We enjoyed this anchorage and we decided to stay a couple of nights before heading to the "big" town of Playa del Coco to get cleared into the country.

Nancy & I have been planning to go sailing for years. We are not ready to retire but decided to take this trip before we get to old. Sailing takes a lot of energy and commitment so we didnt want to wait until we cant physically handle the trip. [...]
