Gearing up with new stuff

This is some of the equipment that I'm installing for my up coming adventure. Although not a necessity, refrigeration and an opportunity to enjoy a cold beer is high on my list. I guess cause I haven't had the opportunity to be on the water as much as I'd like, the self medicating effects of cold beer seems like a must in my book. Cocktail hour is something I look forward to daily. I think with a little time underway, this might change. But for now, let me explain how I've planned out this event. I purchased a Engel Ac/Dc reffer, Model # MR40. It has the ability to freeze @ 0 degrees and also has low power consumption (.7amps) set @ a 40 degree setting. To go with this, since it is a sailboat, I bought a solar system consisting of an 80 watt panel and a sun pro duo control system that hopefully will keep the batteries in good status at any particular anchorage I should like to stay @. The batteries I've chose are the cheapest available through the local Walmart. They are the largest deep cycle they sell. They are touted as having a 125 amp hour capacity and @ $85 a piece with an 18 month guaranteed replacement, I can't see where I can go wrong. I've up graded my lighting system and as much of the nav lights with LED. It should save some power, I hope. I was fortunate enough to purchase a slightly used 2004 electric start Yamaha four stroke High Thrust Sailing motor on craigslist for cheap. It has a 6 amp charging alternator and should allow me ample backup in the case of no wind or sun. That's the power source in the boat. For navigation, I have a 182c Garmin GPS Map. It is the older version with a removable card. I'll have to update it on line threw garmin before I go. For back up I have a hand held Garmin gps 72 new. I purchased today a west marine vhf radio cause my other standard horizon decided not to broadcast out anymore. Also I have a hand held older Icom unit for going to shore. My depth sounder is standard horizon. The simplest basic model with a shallow alarm. My boat only draws 2.5 ft so if you see birds standing, go the other way. Knowing I have a day long crossing when I hit Marco Island to Key West, I decided to purchase an individual epirb unit. I was considering the spot system from Google, but because of the yearly activation fee, I decided on Fast Find 210. It is the 406 MHZ international system. Never know where I go. 7 year battery life and and no annual fee. 3 times as much up front but it will pay for itself in 2 yrs compared with the spot system. Not something that I will ever use, I hope. Safety first though. It is also a small unit and easily fits into a pocket if your going to shore in a dingy. Speaking of which, I have an older rubber raft that I am debating it's utility. Hard to inflate, but do i really need it. I guess if the boat sinks it would be good to have. Got to have a good inflation system for it though. More work to be done there. I'll update that before I go. I will not tow anything behind me in my small craft. Much work to do still. Finish up some wiring mess and patching some bad holes that are left in the deck form old hardware and useless gear that I removed. I'm looking forward with this trip and hope that a positive experiance will lead me to that far away destination in the Bahamas sometime in my life soon. Stay turned and I'll try and update this sight often for the rest of mind sailors out there. Hope some of this info is useful to those that dare to dream of freedom on the seas. Bobby.
