Heading South

Nisos Oinoussa was lovely. On our first evening we strolled along the quay and harbour looking up at the village with pretty houses piled on top of each other going up the steep hill dominated by a huge blue church. The island was inhabited by several Greek shipping magnates and their lovely houses became [...]

A very strange year

Well, we didn't think we would be sailing this year - but here we are! The marina were putting us under pressure to move Freya as she was apparently in the way. In the end we gave in and 24th August, with some apprehension we started our journey to Lesvos. We needn't have worried, Heathrow was eerily [...]

2019 by the numbers

Eighth year of cruising completed. This year’s numbers are:

I don’t want to alarm you but......

We had 10 days in Mytilini before our visitors arrived. We spent the time being very sociable with our fellow yachties. As well as Gordon and Louise on Camira we were joined by Edward on Windhoos from the Netherlands and Uva from Germany. A few bleary mornings were testament to the good nights had by [...]

Overnight to Molyvos

Our overnight passage was beautiful. We left Samothraki just before 5.00 pm to do 78 miles ensuring we arrived in daylight. The sea was totally flat and we had a gentle breeze allowing the main to give us a bit of assistance. The moon was almost full and already rising as we left and it lit our way until [...]

It was time to start heading south and back to Lesvos for the winter. We left Porto Lagos having really enjoyed our few days, there even though it felt as we left as soon as we’d arrived. 37 miles away was our next stop, Samothraki. A small island made of a large chunk of marble a long way from anywhere [...]

Happily going nowhere

02 April 2013 | Viveiro
After a winter of catching up (lovely) and DIY (not so lovely) we're back home, on Freya.

We left Bristol a few weeks ago and had a great week skiing in Andorra on the way back (well, sort of) to Viveiro and Freya. Our first visit to Freya, on the hard, was a huge relief as everything seemed to be fine - nothing was damp or mouldy........

Andrew, a friend we met while here last year very kindly put us up while Freya was out of the water. Andrew, if you read this thank you so much for looking after us and making us so welcome. Easter was a great time to return to Viverio as there were celebrations and processions everyday - weather permitting! They were fascinating if not a bit weird with huge religious icons being carried through the streets by monks or, what appeared to be members of the klu klux klan with pointy hats and hoods and escorted by marching bands. Google Semana Santa to see more.

The first week was spent anti fouling, changing anodes etc but without too many problems, apart from the rain and she was ready to go back in the water quite quickly. Fernando duly arrived with the sling, in the pouring rain, and lifted her in. All was going to plan until we tried to start the engine - there was only a few ominous clicks and not the usual noise of an engine coming to life! Panic! We sat in the sling for ages checking connections, hitting it with a hammer and getting absolutely soaked. We were eventually towed out of the sling (a new experience and somewhat scary!) to a temporary birth.

Of course, it was a festival in Spain and so we had to wait a few days before Fransisco, the mechanic could come. But at least Freya was now floating and we could move on to her.

Fransisco duly arrived yesterday morning and after much 'fiddling' the starter motor worked but the engine wouldn't start! A lot more 'fiddling' and it eventually started but was clearly not happy. After 2nd opinions and 3 way translations it was eventually decided that the head had to come off and go to Lugo for testing and possible skimming.

Viveiro is lovely and we're enjoying it as much as we did last year - which is just as well as we may be here for some time............
