The end of another adventure

Time to move on as we needed to drop Ian and Jess off in Kos for their flight home. There wasn't a breath of wind as we motored to Kos harbour which is very atmospheric under the old castle. It all felt very hectic in the town after a few weeks exploring the tiny, peaceful islands. We were treated to [...]

Stunning Aegean

It was 11 miles to Skala Patmos and an amazing broad reach sail all the way (almost!) - definitely what it's all about. The sea could've been flatter but it was as expected after the high winds. We went side to on the quay with a Finnish boat where it was very flat and peaceful, especially after the [...]

At last, we’re off!

And finally we were ready to go! The engine started first turn, we let off the lines and left Samos marina. We've loved our extended stay on Samos but we're not sorry to leave the marina which is very is unprofessionally run. We were joined on our first trip for ages by dolphins just outside Pythagorio. [...]

Very stressful final preparations

The engine was removed very efficiently and with great respect for the boat. It was taken to Zlatco's workshop for further investigation! They returned an hour or so later to clean up - very impressive and the engine bay has never looked so clean and shiny! It was very traumatic watching Freya having [...]

Circumnavigation Complete!

02 June 2015 | Castelsardo - 4,095 NM
Sunny and Hot
Apocryphally a school child once wrote that "Sir Francis Drake circumcised the world in a 102ft cutter". Well we haven't performed any intimate operations or been around the world yet, but we have just completed a circumnavigation of Sardinia. It certainly beats our previous circumnavigations in the Bristol channel around the Holms or Denny Island! We arrived in Sardinia last September and made landfall in Fertillia just north of Alghero and we passed there on our way to Porto Conte.

We've just spent three nights at anchor, the first in Porto Conte a short 8 mile motor from Alghero. We anchored just off the beach where we spent a beautiful and peaceful night on the sea without going ashore, quite magical. We then motored (again) in very rolly seas to Stintino 35 miles further on. As we passed Capo Caccia, the sea mist was clinging to the cliff tops above the Grotto Neptuno (which we visited with Yve and Martin on the tourist boat a few weeks ago). The anchorage in Stintino was very sheltered and we had no problems there with the swell and had two more peaceful nights. This time we did go ashore to stretch our legs and grab a bite to eat, we found Stintino as charming as we did on our visit last year.

We then moved on the the 23 miles to Castelsardo. The seas were flat calm and the winds were around 5 knots. As this was to be our last sail until mid July we decided to raise the main sail anyway. As it filled the boat picked up a little speed, so we unfurled the jib and we went a bit faster, so we turned off the engine. We were sailing! Even if only at 1 knot. We tuned the trim of the sails and all sudden we were doing 2.5 kts in only 5-8kts of true wind. Unheard of for Freya we used to need 10+ kts to even start to get her moving. Her new sails must be worth it!

As we only had a relatively short distance to go and we were enjoying sailing in the flat calm seas and the clear blue sky we stuck with our gentle progress. After a couple of hours we had only made 5 miles but then the winds picked to between 9-12 kts and all of a sudden we were sailing at up to 5 kts, not massively fast but it felt like we were flying and meant we arrived in Castelsardo before the marina closed. It took us 6.5 hours to do the 23 miles, but we had a great day on the water, exciting it wasn't but we enjoyed it.

We are returning home tomorrow for the weddings and then will be spending two weeks on Freya with Lorraine's mum before we leave Sardinia in the second week of July.
