Departure Procedures

03 November 2010 | South Atlantic Ocean
Departing Cape Town on Saturday, 23 October 2010

Departure!

Once the yacht is provisioned and filled with fuel, the crew is briefed
on safety procedures with the do's and don't at sea and sail handling. We
are then ready to prepare the flight plan.

When preparing to depart from a port there are a few anomalies that need
to be carried out. Firstly, do a seven day weather check to establish if clearing out is possible (weather permitting) as one is only 'given 24hrs ' to depart once cleared.

Then I proceed with the clearing out which entails starting with the
paper work trail. The mooring fees as well as any port dues need to be
paid then with the flight plan in hand it's off to the Port Authorities
where I'm given clearance from the Immigration office who generate more paperwork and stamp our passports. Given the clearance we proceed to Customs where still more forms are filled out and copies made for the next port of call. We then go back to the Port Control office to hand in the
completed flight plan. None of these offices are within walking distance of each other and parking is scarce so it's no quick trick and sometimes takes hours if you catch the Customs office busy with shipping agents too.

When all the flight plan requirements are completed we normally depart,
so it's farewell to family and friends. Some come to the yacht to wave us
goodbye and wish us 'Bon Voyage' and some sit at home wondering if we have left. Then we slip our lines and turn into the big blue for the start of another interesting and challenging voyage.
