When Pollywogs became Shellbacks.

'Captain Ron'

King Neptune was believed to control the sea and lived on the ocean floor. In the days when sailors had only the wind that filled their canvas to push them along and a pint of rum a day to make the long voyages bearable, they hoped that by paying tribute to Neptune, he'd keep them safe at sea. The baptism involved making the transformation from the ranks of being a pollywog and a landlubber into a real sailor called a Shellback. Whether you wanted to make this transformation or not, you had no choice and the cost doesn't come cheaply.

'Amazonian Pirates'

The ritual begins upon the crossing of the equator. On Tuesday, 23 November 2010 at 19h30, as our good yacht 'Eish' crossed the line, from south to north, we enacted the traditional ceremony whilst standing in the warm breeze under the moon on the foredeck. Dressed as an Amazonian Pirate, I poured sea water over the Pollywogs, Chris and Kyle. Chris dressed up for the occasion but Kyle was reluctant so as a sacrifice we trimmed his hair - real short!! Whilst enjoying a feast we had prepared earlier and each holding a small glass of rum, we poured a little into the ocean as a toast to King Neptune. There was a bit of yelling and cheering and we took each other's photos. And for the most part, all in good fun. Plus, once you've done it, the next time you get to be the one dishing it out!!!
