We head to the eastern part of Tikehau and anchor outside the jetty in front of the main village, Tuherahera. No other boats. The jetty protects a small harbor that seems deep enough for us (2,10 m draft). But we don’t want to chance it because it must be dangerous with strong ENE winds. In fact, that night, we have terrible squalls with 25-30knts ENE and we’re glad to be outside the harbor. Waves go over the jetty. The entire lagoon comes running towards us. But we’re anchored in 10m in good sand bottom. No coral heads. On land, not much there. A small grocery store with very limited supplies. We walk toward the airport and enjoy a cool beer at a small pension next to the airport. After a rather bad night with such strong rains and winds, we cancel our plan to sail around the atoll and head back to motu Teonai. The plan is to head to Rangiroa the next day. The weather forecasts are rather bad — a depression with 45-55 kknts winds over Tahiti and neighboring islands, which head right toward the Tuamotus although not as strong. But we are concerned about the conditions in the passes at Rangiroa. No internet.
