The run to Caicos
28 April 2013 | Bahamas
A good weather window opened up and 8 boats decided to sail out. 3 headed straight to Puerto Rico and us 5 headed off to Caicos. It was a pleasant sail, catching tuna and mahi on the way. We arrived in Sapadilla Bay, Provinciales late the following afternoon. We anchored off and the next morning motored into Caicos Marina and Shipyard, where we cleared in. It was an additional $300 for a fishing licence, so that was not going to happen. It was pleasant here. We hired a car, had a look around, with Jim and Sherry off Dulcinea. We saw "the artist formally known as Prince"'s holiday house with it's own marina and had lunch on the beach. All good. It was soon time to leave again. Kirribati and Whisper were heading off to Haiti, then Columbia. Lady Ella back to the Bahamas and Dulcinea and ourselves of to South Caicos. It was another spectacular sail across the Caicos Banks and this time I got to fly my asymmetrical spinnaker. It was magnificent! The water was clear and being in 8-10ft of water most of the way makes it quite exciting. It feels as if we were suspended above the sand just flying along. Jeremie decided he wanted to be dragged behind the boat for a while. See pic.
We arrived in Cockburn harbor that afternoon. Not a very nice anchorage. Too much swell perpendicular to the wind. I found Caicos not very welcoming and I wouldn't go back, by choice. We waited out a heavy blow for a few days then headed off to Luperon, in the Dominican Republic.
