by Capts. Dave and Desiree
One can never feel like they have "done it all," but I am coming close to that sensation, especially with the number of sports and activities I have learned in the last thirty years. As we were approaching Costa Rica, Dave started expressing his interest in surfing. Surfing? Never thought about learning that one. In fact, even though I was born and raised in California, I never had stood on a surfboard in my life. Besides just never thinking about it, the Pacific is cold!!! (All right, no whining).
Needless to say I recently learned it was on Dave' "list." Well, why not. We put the anchor down in Playa Dominicalito, where up the road in Playa Dominical was a surf camp called Green Iguana. We later learned where we were anchored held that name since the waves were smaller--which for our learning curve was a distinct advantage.
We swam to shore and headed into town. An hour later we were in the Green Iguana van for our first lesson. Ryan and Wesley had stayed behind playing in the surf zone catching the waves. We were told we would have a two-hour "intro" lesson to surfing about waves, rip tides, etc. However, after they realized we had left Ryan and Wesley playing on their own, that we were from California (not somewhere like Wisconsin), we were given a five minute lesson how to hop on the board and then we were off into the surf zone.
Well. Dave and I can't say we were naturals, but by the end of the two hours we did catch a wave and surfed into shore. Not to say over the next three days we were not tumbled and tossed by the waves, and truthfully, feeling pretty thrashed. In fact we both agreed we had not been beaten up like this in a long time. But it was another part of the adventure. It is Ryan's turn now do get you the details.....
