Galapagos, WOW!

14 April 2010 | Isla Isabella
Wow!!! Our Galapagos visit has been incredible, exceeding even high expectations. We spent most of our time on the island of San Cristobal, Wreck Bay, and the final week or so at Isla Isabella, Puerto Vilamill. Everyday seems to have been an adventure, as we've kept busy enjoying the sights, hiking, snorkeling, surfing, and exploring, while always in awe of the wildlife around us. We've seen far too much to even try to write about it all here, but we'll list some of the highlights below:
1. All the sea life we got to see, swim with and interact with, from big gentle sea turtles, to spotted eagle rays, to large manta rays, to playing imitation games with sea lion pups that swim right up in front of you and do tricks.
2. Seeing the unique species of birds thriving in these islands from blue footed boobies, to frigate birds, to yellow finches, to pink flamingos and even penguins.
3. Standing in awe of the prehistoric marine iguanas and ancient tortoises that call these islands home.
4. The surf has been outstanding, as we got to ride the waves of two solid swells.
5. Seeing all kinds of sea life just at anchor from little fish to feeding tunas, to sea lions & turtles, to mini sharks and penguins.
6. Visiting an organic farm to hand pick plenty of fruits such as papaya, pineapple, limes, sugar cane, banana, watermelon, cantaloupe, maricuya, guaba, & vege's like eggplant, bell peppers even basil in provisioning for our South Pacific crossing.
7. Surviving being ship wrecked for half a day when on a snorkeling tour, our panaga flipped in the surf and emptied us into the water near a lava reef. It was definitely more adventure than we signed up for, but everything turned out OK.

Up next, we set sail for the South Pacific, and French Polynesia. It will be nearly 3000 miles of open ocean, trade wind sailing before we reach the Marquesas. It will certainly be a challenge, but we are setting off with group of boats on Thursday, which we will keep in touch with daily over SSB radio. Wish us luck and keep us in your prayers, and we'll report again when we reach port in Hiva Oa. Au revoir!
