Got Surf
11 May 2009 | Huatulco, Mexico
Arriving at Puerto Escondido, we were the only sailboat anchored outside the pangas. Even cooler, we could look down the beach right into the Mexican Pipeline and see the throwing waves. Up early each morning, we dingy'd into the beach and hit the waves. Kelita snapped photos as I did my best to catch and ride the waves of the pipeline. We were told it was small compared to previous days, but I was quite happy with the surf coming in, 5ft to double overhead. This beach certainly lived up to its reputation of producing powerful & sometimes vicious barrels. Every wave caught and paddle out back into the lineup was a challenge and an adrenaline shot. After the morning sessions, Kelita & I would retire back to the boat to stay out of the heat, and we'd usually go for a boogie board / bodysurf session at sun down.
One evening the wind picked up pretty strong, so we pulled anchor and headed South, arriving in Huatulco the next afternoon. We've anchored in a cozy little bay, but the area is quite deserted as the cruiseships have cancelled their arrivals due the flu scare. Here, we've met up with some other sailboat friends as we all get ready to head South and cross the Tehuanepec (a very windy section of Mexico). On my birthday, a group of us jumped into a taxi to go surf a fantastic right hander just down the way. We all got some incredible waves, as there was pretty much zero crowd other than a few locals that rode with us. We finished the day off with a group dinner on the beach in front of our boats.
Up next, Central America and crossing the Tehuanepec. We'll post again when we can. R&K
