Guatemala
08 July 2009 | back onboard in El Salvador
Our visit to Guatemala was amazing, we loved each of the 31 days we spent there, exploring the country and getting to know new family members. Time flew by, and only felt as if a couple of days had passed before it was time to return back to our boat. The highlights include:
1. Getting to know Kelita's 11 aunts & uncles, her sister Kenia, her 20+ delightful cousins, and grandpa Alfredo (80 yrs young). Meeting everyone was a first for both of us, but we know we've built meaningful relationships that will last a lifetime.
2. Strolling the markets of Coban with Carmencita, the wife of uncle Mario where we stayed during our visit. All the fresh produce & products sold on the streets and in mini-stalls by the indigenous people was daily adventure into Guatemalan culture.
3. We traveled into Peten, the jungle province, to experience Tikal, hike its temples explore the Mayan structures, and appreciate the beauty.
4. We chartered a minibus with 17 other family members to visit the pristine pools of Semuc Champey.
5. We explored Biotopo, a rainforest reserve where we hiked a 3800km trail in search of the beautiful & elusive Quetzal, Guaemala's national bird.
6. We hiked 50m back into Rey Marcos cave, crossing an underground river, experiencing many stalagmites firsthand, and enjoying the outside waterfalls.
7. We visited a family friend's countryside ranch and rode horses in the greenery.
8. Strolled the ancient city of Antigua w/ uncle Sergio.
9. Kelita's mom came to join us, and we celebrated Kelita's birthday w/ many family. We killed 6 turkeys and made an awesome soup in a clay pot w/ tamales wrapped in banana leaves.
10. We were present for uncle Rueben's wedding, another joyful get together.
Leaving Guatemala and family members behind was difficult; there wasn't a dry eye among any of the group who came to see us off. We both miss them so much and had gotten used to being with them each day. Now were back at the boat, tackling repair/improvement projects and feeding our lonesome mosquitoes who've gladly welcomed us back. When we're ready, we'll be moving on from El Salvador, with Nicaragua & Costa Rica on our upcoming itinerary.
