Farewell Cocos
25 June 2013
Jacolette
It was just another school morning here onboard Goody at the Cocos Keeling islands. Joop was busy in the cockpit with maintenance tasks, Johannes was on a school break playing cars with Dirk. It was when I went outside to get some fresh air (as much needed by mom-teachers!!) that I saw the fins, to be confirmed seconds later with spinning leaps through the air. Dolphins!! Within minutes we had four pairs of fins, four goggles, GoPro camera, underwater camera, Lelei and her car seat in the dingy and we were on our way.
We were rewarded with above and below water entertainment by a dolphin group. The Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops sp.) leaped and danced around us. The Adam family hung motionless in the aquamarine water staring in awe at the activities of the dolphin family. The largest of the family came to investigate Joop from close, and he passed the test, as just before they touched noses, the dolphin steered away. After a while Joop identified two grey reef sharks circling in close proximity of the dolphin family, causing the dolphins to tighten their circle of movements, especially around the youngster.
Late afternoon we headed to the beach to refill our coconut supplies, kick ball and build sand castles. It was much later and with quiet thoughts that we finally headed back to Goody. This was our last sunset at this atoll.
