Home at Last

Wednesday morning saw us up early with the smell of home in the air and the excitement was present in both of us to finally be nearing home. At 0600 we left the Bundaberg marina and shortly after we were doing 8 knots under full sail in a 10-15 knot breeze.

The final leg home

Six days sailing to go and we'll be home, and today we've just completed the third day of those six. Yep, Yeppoon to The Narrows, The Narrows to Pancake Creek, and today Pancake Creek to Bundaberg. Tomorrow we go to Big Woody Is (Near Kingfisher Bay Resort), then Wednesday on to Inskip Point, then [...]

Sun, wind, spinnakers, and storms

Our friends, Garry and Liz Stewart from Perth, arrived Saturday afternoon and the weather looked perfect for our southbound trip to Yeppoon, so we departed Mackay early on Sunday morning for our first stop-over at Digby Is. Tony Patch and the crew on "Last Resort" joined us in this beautiful anchorage [...]

Spinaker runs to the south

After Mario and Carmel (friends from back home) boarded at Hamilton Island, we set off for Shaw Is. and anchored in Billbob Bay for the night. After sundowners on the beach with the other cruisers in the bay, we headed back for a great BBQ tea and long catch-up chat.

Cruisin' the Whitsundays

The next morning I cleaned the other hull and then set sail for Macona Inlet. WOW! A 15knot breeze over the beam and we sat on 9.5-10.5 knots (Max 12 knots) for most of the trip. It's amazing what a clean bottom can do!

A trip to remember

With the SE winds dropping we topped up the water tanks at Nelly Bay at and made the bold move to head for Airlie. The forecast on Monday was "E/NE winds 10/15 knots with afternoon seabreezes 15/20 knots inshore. Seas to1.4 m" Our heading for most of the day was SE so we went for it. It was a reasonable [...]

Renewing Old Friendships

15 September 2008 | The 'Upstart Hilton' on Cape Upstart
Greg
After an easy sail from Bowen, we rounded Cape Upstart and anchored in the second little bay
from the cape's tip.We had heard from Terry Stone(Bowen Marina) that a mate of his, Rod
Prescott and wife Beth had a holiday house here. Then the penny dropped, as we realised they
were our friends also as we had met them on an earlier holiday whilst overseas. After going
ashore, we were very excited to learn that they were both here for the weekend too and it
didn't take long to catch up.We saw several pods of whales just offshore here. The next day we all went for a sail in 15 knot winds and were
able to hoist the spinnaker on our return leg. Very exciting. Rod gave Annette some mud crab
claws (Huge!!) to eat for lunch on our boat and we were invited for a seafood tea that
night. During the afternoon, the boys collected Oysters from the nearby rocks and I was able
to keep some to use onboard over the next few days (We collected so many!). I put most of
them in the tin, but of course I had to check if they were OK as well. That night Sahra and
Ben cooked up a treat.. Oysters Kilpatrick, Oysters in egg and breadcrumbs, Calamari,
Barramundi, and Beth treated us to her curried prawns on rice to finish off. DELICIOUS! Of
course all the above was washed down with a good white and a red. What a meal to savour and
remember.Thankyou guys! Fortunately we remembered to turn the anchor light on before
departing, and so found our way home to bed easily, albeit late.
The next morning we left Cape Upstart (and the Upstart Hilton) and motored in 4kn tail winds
to Cape Bowling Green for the night. Next stop Magnetic Island.
