A Welcoming Welcome

We left Lowestoft at dawn and knocked the tide for a couple of hours, which was well worth it as the wind slowly freshened and backed, threatening to head us as we sailed North along the Norfolk coast. however once you pass Great Yarmouth and Caister (both haunts of my youth) the coast swings steadily east, enabling us to cruise along on a broad reach in sight of land despite the wind shift. Lucky or what?
We got on so well that a bold decision was made to stand on to Wells-Next-the-Sea - bold because the entrance channel shifts and is shoal so a night time approach was undesirable. We arrived at dusk and followed a local open fishing / creel boat up the channel, which for the first time anyway is sinuous and at times unclear, to say the least.
The guy ahead heard us calling port control (who were away for the night) and very kindly stooged about inside, directing us to a berth right alongside the port office where we were to stay for a few days. He took our lines and gave us a brief lowdown on the facilities and the town. What a change from the Lowestoft experience!
