Once north of Hartlepool, the coast is littered with castles. I don't mean Martello towers or Scottish tower houses, I mean great big brooding piles of stone on almost every prominent headland. Alnwick, Dunstanburgh, Bamburgh and Berwick come to mind in particular. Some were not easy to identify from the sea but one in particular, Bamburgh, still stands out in my memory. heck of a pile!
I [...]am ex Royal Navy weapons engineer, a semi-retired military marine engineering consultant, an RYA Yachtmaster (30 years +!) a serial inventor and a rebreather scuba diver, as well as being the co-inventor of SuperSpout, a spill prevention fuel-can spout (Dragons Den etc) which is much loved in the sailing community for filling outboards and stuff.

visited many remote and beautiful places. After sailing in the Irish Sea for a while, we went south to explore the West coast of France. Grey Dove spent 8 years in Rochefort exploring the bay of Biscay, the Morbihan, the Gironde and Canal de Midi to the Med. before returning to the Firth Of Forth for a well earned refit. Currently exploring the historic ports around the East of Scotland and having a great time doing it.
