Bridges Bridges Bridges
21 October 2015
Hurry....sit.....wait.....hurry....sit....wait.......it is quite the dance. Being new to this thing called the Intra Costal Waterway, I am amazed at the number of folks and yes.....bridges. All types from the swing, to the lift, to the Bascule to the nerve wracking 65 foot fixed bridge. It is a moment we hold our breath and pray that the tide is in our favor. With a mast height of 63 1/2 feet and another 10 or better inches for an antenna, it does not leave much room.
This morning we set our alarm for 6:00 am to make the 7 o'clock Great Bridge Lock Bridge opening only to find out that we were too new to this. A fellow Caliber owner who had tied up at the Great Bridge public dock clued us into the fact that getting through this bridge at 7 would mean going less than 3 miles and waiting until 8:30 when the next bridge would open. So.....we sat back and had a nice leasurely breakfast of fruit, yogurt and a delicious crumb cake from The Desserterie that our friend Kay had brought us. When 8:00 rolled around there was a line of folks waiting to pass through. Needless to say we were thankful for the folks who taught us a valuable lesson......plan for the day....not the next bridge.
Today we will get beyond Coinjock and anchor somewhere off the North River. It will be a slow day but one to take in the scenery and relax a bit.
