Leon Levy Plant Preserve & Buccaneer Club
11 March 2016
Nice day yesterday. Our friends on Diamond Sky (Roger & Lora) has rented a car and offered to carry us all to the Leon Levy Plant Preserve. The sign says it is a two mile walk......I am not sure they actually measured this as it was closer to a four mile drive.
We first stopped into the Buccaneer Club for breakfast. Rum soaked french toast....tradtional Bahamian fish boil.....corn beef and grits.....tuna and grits......and your traditional american breakfast as well. Very nicely done and the owner came to each table and became part of your group. She taught us about the different conch and whcih come from the sound and which are from the ocean. You can tell the age of a conch by the lip of it and the smaller ones from the sound are more tender and used to make canch salad.....the larger ones from the sea are used in stews and have to be tenderized before using.
We then drove the four miles to the Preserve. It was about a mile and a half walk with all types of plant life. I think I enjoyed seeing the edible plant life just because I am more familiar with them. They had poisonous.....medicinal (which was interesting).....ornamental plants as well as birds and some turtles and snakes that are all part of the natural habitat. We climbed to a tower that overlooked the entire preserve to the ocean. After an hour and a half our crew was getting tired. What better to revive them than a trip to the "cheaper liquor store". LOL. New life!
Off today to the Glass Window (I think).....at least that is our intention. From there on to Spanish Wells.
