Waiting on Weather
21 March 2016
Yes.....again we find ourselves waiting out the weather. This time we are with River Rat and Glorious in Little Harbour moored at Pete's Pub. It could be worse you know......at least we can get off the boats......explore caves, beaches, shell and enjoy some Bahamian flare at the Pub.
Yesterday we walked through a gallery that houses the works of Randolph Johnston and the continuing efforts by his son, Peter. The have worked to create a Bronze Art Foundry and showcase them all in a beautiful gallery. The art is beautiful and you are instantly amazed at the size of some of these sculptures. Then....being here and knowing how difficult it is to get things in and out of here, you have to wonder where and how the bronze gets in and out of Little Harbour. Where there is a will.....there is a way.
So the Johnston family came here to escape a life of "the mega machine" and settle on an island somewhere (they knew not where) and continue his works. They set sail from Massachusetts and ended up in Little Harbour In May of 1952. They settled in the caves along with the bats and crabs until they could build a thatched hut to provide them shelter. Very interesting this story of determination and desire.
We walked a trail that led us to the old lighthouse that lit the area back in 1952. There was not much of it left and it hardly resembles much more than a shell of an old home now, but we can see what years of wind and waves can do to these structures.
So....we get to enjoy the surroundings for another day as we are expecting gusts to 35 knots today. The five amigos.....yes..Greg, Carl, Deb, Dan and Debbie were going to go snorkeling this morning but the winds are already up to the 20's and it is difficult in these lightweight dighnys to fight the wind and current in the cuts.
