Port Washington Bound
18 June 2018
Ti Amo leaves her sock assignment at precisely 9 o’clock as we are told that getting through the famous Hells Gate passage at a certain tidal and current run is important.
There are about eight sailboats all leaving together. Could it be we all have the same intel on tides and current? Actually the other seven are part of a Catalina flotilla that had a rendezvous in New York over the weekend. They let us join in on their parade and seeing as this was familiar territory to them, we were all too happy to slow down and let them take the lead.
The passage up the East River was nice with plenty of architectural expressions along the way to keep you snapping your camera. Between the bridges, the apartment housing, business buildings, Rikers Island and a light house, this river has it all.
The intel on the timing of the tides and current was more than accurate. We came through Hells Gate just as we were told .....flying at 13.6 knots at the highest......with 6 knots being our typical cruising speed. Almost felt like we needed to put our hands up like in the roller coaster rides.....lol.
Once we are through there, we are our way to Port Washington. A quaint little town in Hempstead Harbor......and who do we find but Sunset Run from Regent Point Marina. We picked up a mooring ball in front of Judy and Fernando and after settling in went over to visit and catch up. Cruising sure suits these two as they had been enjoying the town here and could tell you where the important things were.
Back to Ti Amo after a grocery run and just enough time to grab a nap before dinner aboard and planning our next destination.
