Newport, Rhode Island

25 June 2018
With about a 25 mile passage from Block Island to Newport, we set out at about 9 o’clock. It was a little foggy as we were leaving and within no time the fog lifted enough for us to make our move.

The old saying you are never too far from home is so true. When
we anchored yesterday, we were not comfortable with our distance with a Catamaran but felt we were both safe. We could not get too much further away from him without being in the channel or mooring field. When we woke this morning we have all turned in the night and find the name of the boat familiar. And why shouldn’t it....it was Bill on Force from White Stone, VA. He is off before we had a chance to chat but we are sure we will see him again soon.

Newport is beautiful from the entrance of the river to the mooring fields. There were at least four races in various locations on the river as we entered. Off the starboard bow as we meander in is a lighthouse and beyond that Jackie Kennedy Onassis childhood home and stables known as Hammersmith Farm.

In the mooring field they have a spot to drop anchor so we did as stated earlier next to Force and a boat that actually looks desserted. The anchoring policy here is you can anchor for two weeks but you must leave for four days before you can return and re anchor. I wonder if Florida wants to hie Harbor Masters to help with their derelict boat issue.

We quickly get ready and run into town for a look at the area. Wow....more shopping????? This trip is so different from the Bahamas.

We are making our plan to head into town this morning. We will spend the day here and head to Onset tomorrow to get ready for the Cape Cod Canal.
