Off to Cape May
30 July 2018
With the alarm set for 5:00 a.m., we awake to a blanket of fog in the anchorage of Great Salt Pond. Snooze for another thirty minutes and then get up and prepare for the day. Coffee made, banana bread for breakfast, sandwiches ready, pasta salad made for dinner. That is the galley chefs major concern is to have what I can prepared ahead so that if the seas are rough I don’t have to spend much time down below in the galley.
Next we warm up the engine, turn on all instruments, make sure we have our SOSpenders and tethers at hand. All secure down below for rough seas and all prepared up top. We will be on our way as soon as we dig our anchor out from the mud.
We had a huge scare as we were coming out of the channel......actually we were still in the channel when Greg heard something wrong in the engine and then saw the temperature gauge had risen dramatically. We were in the channel so Greg had me turn off the engine and we coasted a bit out of the way and set the anchor. Within moments Greg had diagnosed an air pocket in the water intake line. Nothing a good old fashioned bucket of water won’t cure. We are back in business and thankfully we created no navigational hazard for others.
Our 30 hour voyage is underway with us each trying to grab an hour nap in the day and then after dinner we started our night watches. We again each took a one hour nap and at 10 o’clock I would be on watch for 3 hours and then Greg would get it at 1 o’clock and then back to me at 4 o’clock. After that, we are geared up and ready to head to shore so no one is sleeping. So we get connectivity back and we post the blog....let family know we are okay and soon we will be in at Cape May.
