Albemarle Sound
28 November 2018
With an early start to the day, we pulled up anchor and left the anchorage as others were still not stirring. We wanted to make up some lost days and get as many miles behind us as we could.
The sound was dicey with winds 20-25 knots. We reefed our headsail and crossed the sound without issue. We then called the bridge tender and asked for an opening and honestly all bridge tenders should be as nice as this guy. Within moments we were through and into the Alligator River and then further to the Alligator/Pugo Canal.
We received a call from a trawler ahead of us that there was a piece of wood or a tree near the center line of the waterway. At mile marker 115 just about one mile south of it there was what appeared to be a tree sticking up like it had been planted there.
It was a chilly day but Greg brought his trusty little alcohol heater to help warm the cockpit.
We decided to go beyond our initial anchorage right at the end of the canal and continued to just beyond Bel Haven to Pungo Creek anchorage. A lovely spot safe and secure with the word of winds out of the northwest gusting 25-30 knots. And better yet chili on the stove with red chile cheese bread and the hint of a sunset.
Life is good!
