Grounded Day

02 February 2019 | Joes Sound
Just sitting here thinking about my "yesterday" and wondering how in the world I got myself in the mess I was in.

We have discussed how skinny the water is where we are anchored. The sound (almost in its entirety) at low tide takes all of the water out of the sound except for this one half mile long by 280 foot wide anchorage. We have seven boats anchored in here and could probably fit one or two shallow draft boats. The depths in our sliver of an anchorage are anywhere from 4.3 to 9.6 feet.

However the sound itself has a much larger footprint but when you look at the charts there are warnings....."nearly dry at low water". That speaks to about the entire area surrounding us.

Yesterday I was feeling brave enough to take the dinghy out to the grocery store. Okay so it gets shallow at low water.....that would not happen until 1:00pm so I thought if we left at 10:00am we should be there and back before it bottomed out. Boy was that a mistake. Two things against us (I had Laurie, Lorraine and Karen with me)......the sun had gone in so eyeing the channel was not as easy a we thought, and.....we did not carry any charts to help us find our way. So we got stuck a couple of times before making the decision to head back to "higher ground".....I mean water. We had a good laugh and all went home and got warm showers as we were soaked from walking the dinghy out of some treacherous spots.

Later in the evening we were to gather on 2 Outrageous for dinner. Laurie was making her Lobster Etoufee and the rest of us were bringing sides to share. It was truly an thing of beauty and we were thankful for the men that hunted lobster for us all to have such a delicious dinner. Mike and Lorraine had joined us and Mike brought his guitar so we were serenaded by him and Paul on the harmonica.

Just another night in paradise on earth!
