Delectable Bay, The Bight of Acklins
09 February 2019
Our day started about 7:30am with intentions of going into French Wells at high tide which from what we had calculated would be around 9:40am. With just nine miles to go we pulled up the anchors and slowly made our approach to French Wells. 2 Outrageous took the lead on this venture as his draft is better than ours. We monitored his soundings as he called them over the radio and we stayed in his tracks. We never touched bottom and were happy to get back into the “white” water on the chart. After the nail biting tension, we were very disappointed on state of French Wells. There were not any beaches to land your dingy and it seemed very sparse of anything other than mangroves and shallow water. With still enough water to turn around and exit, we followed our bread crumbs and 2 Outrageous back out.
Plan B was to head to the Bight of Acklins and find an anchorage. Grace 5 had left us as their draft was definitely a challenge at French Wells so we called to let them know we were on our way. We had a lovely sail down to the wavepoint where we turned for the Bight and then the wind picked up to about 22 knots and we had to reef our headsail. It stayed with us for a bit but soon we were too close to the wind to keep the sails full so instead of fighting we pulled them in as we were only in about 9 foot of water. The ride was gorgeous as the water changed color two or three times on us. I don’t know if it has something to do with limestone or the way the sun is hitting our shallow waters, but it was beautiful to see.
Safely anchored at Delectable Bay with Grace 5, 2 Outrageous, Lost Shaker, Delphina, and Jubilee II. Yes we caught up to the group we met at Joes Sound last week. We will have a beach party on the 9th at 4:00. Always fun when you have a large group of folks gathered on the beach.
Off to prepare dinner and ready for another day on Delectable Bay.
