A day at Acklins

10 February 2019 | Delectable Bay, Acklins
Bright and early three dinghys head around the corner from the anchorage ... Lost Shaker, Jubilee II and Delphina. I would say it was about 7:30 when they left and the anchorage was pretty calm at that time. At 9:00 we got a call from 2 Outrageous to “giddy up” as we three, (2 Outrageous, Grace V and Ti Amo) would be heading around the corner. We missed the calm anchorage hour however and took a little bit of a pounding on our way. When we rounded the corner we did not see our friends or their dinghies but we felt we would stop at the government dock and take a walk into “town” or to the airport.

All dinghys secured and we head up the road. Now this is not just any road in the Bahamas, this one looks as though it had been freshly paved.....maybe within the year anyhow and there were no potholes. We had heard it was about a two mile hike to the town and we were ready to move our feet. We had Poppy (Grace V’s yellow lab) and Jaxon along for the walk. When we came to the fork in the road we saw the “downed” airplane and knew that must be close to the airport, so the other way must be town. And actually “town” was given away by the large BTC (Batelco phone) tower standing tall.
So we went to the left towards town and probably got halfway when we elected to stop a car and ask them how much further it was to town. When she chuckled at the question, we should have taken the hint. She suggested we turn around and head to the airport which had a restaurant that we could have lunch and a beer. With a quick “about face” we head to the airport.

Exhausted pups and tired backs and feet, we were all excited to see the airport. Something must be going on as there were streamers of flags flyings and a host of folks sitting around in cars and in the restaurant. When we asked the government official why all the people he said the plane was coming at noon. You can get people to the boat on the day it comes, people to the plane on the day it comes and folks to church on Sunday but make sure the plane or the boat don’t arrive on a Sunday because church will be empty.

Anyhow we sat under a tree with three or four little children as they played with the dogs. The boys went to take pictures of the downed plane and got the “skinny” on the plane running short of fuel and having somewhat a crash landing. We enjoyed our cool beverages and headed back to the boats To finish our long walk for the day. As we are heading down the street we see the plane coming in and can only imagine the excitement back at the airport.

We had a scheduled beach party at 4:00 at the small spit of a beach. It was great to catch up with our friends on Delphina, Jubilee II and Lost Shaker again and to hear their experiences of this area. It was extremely heartwarming for me to meet another who was missing her grandchild. It is difficult to be away from family (any of them) but it is more so when they are little and they change in the blink of an eye. We go to leave the party and our dinghys are stuck on a sand bar. Comically Tim stands up in his dinghy and pretends to be the sail that will help push him off. Oh well, we are all back in the water navigating to deeper blue hues and then back to the boats for the evening.
