When in the Keys for this extended amount of time with a rental car, you must visit Key West, right?
The winds are still blowing crazy but the rain has stopped so why not take a day trip to Key West and enjoy a little sunshine in a different atmosphere. My only concern is crossing the Seven Mile bridge however the captain is up to it so with a little prep work we are off to Key West.
The ride is a long ninety miles which by my standards at home is nothing. I would do that and more in a day to see my grandchildren but the one thing about this ride is it is almost all one lane. It can get monotonous and could really be a lot worse if not for the shops along the way and then the breaks of beautiful blue waters.
When we arrive it is right at lunch time and the area is getting a little crazy with the weekend warriors and other visitors for Christmas. We found a nice spot to eat that was on the water but offered some protection from the wind. I had the most amazing salad with mango, strawberries, spinach, red onions, goat cheese a few bacon crumbles and blackened shrimp. The dressing was a star fruit vinaigrette and it was light and a perfect accompaniment to the fruit and shrimp.
We finished lunch and walked up and down Duvall Street listening to all the music coming from the various bars. Stores galore full of t-shirts and other memorabilia to spend your money on. We stopped in at the Tiki Bar for a quick afternoon drink before heading back to Key Largo.
It was a pleasant day and a great change of scenery but as much as we enjoyed it, Key Largo and Tavernier offer quite a bit and it is not 90 miles away. We had hoped we would be going to the boat parade but it was cancelled due to the wind.
Another day in paradise is done but these folks are itching to get moving. From the sounds of it, it will be closer to the New Year than we had hoped.
