Shroud Cay

13 January 2020 | Big Majors, Exumas, Bahamas

Knowing we wanted to be “stuck” in the Exumas due to the wind forecast, we left Coral Harbour and headed southeast to Shroud Cay. We had a magnificent sail....one that you wish did not have to end. We were happy to drop the anchor however in the beautiful waters of the Exumas at Shroud.

We did not know how long we would be anchored here but we thought we may be able to scoot down the Exuma chain with the easterly winds that were predicted.

We ended up spending four days at Shroud doing mangrove dinghy rides and visiting the beach as often as we could to allow Jaxon to run. We all agreed that leaving Nassau/Coral Harbor when we did was a smart move..

The one thing about being in the Shroud area, it is part of the Exuma Land and Sea Park and they have no ability to connect to the internet so we had no way to let folks know we were okay. That can be a little unnerving when you have been communicating daily and then you all of a sudden stop. I know most people understand that it can happen, but there are still a few that worry something could be wrong.

On the fourth day at Shroud we thought we may have a break enough in the wind to make the trek down the chain a bit. With hopes of reaching Pipe Cay, we left the anchorage at about 0800. The wind was in such a direction that it made it impossible for us to sail so we motored bashing into waves for about five hours. It was not the best move we have made, but we were safe.....just felt beat up when we got into Big Majors. Yes, we got all the way to Big Majors. dropped the hook and then got our long awaited lunch.

Now to plan for the upcoming week of more adverse winds.
