A walk to Duncan Town

28 February 2020 | Southside Bay, Ragged Island, Bahamas

With yet another move to Southside Bay, we elected to take a walk to town to see if there might be any provisions at Maxine’s store and to see how things are coming with their rebuilding.

With our move, we came upon another Caliber 40, Jacqueline, captained by David and his first mate Suzanne. They joined along with 2 Outrageous on our walk to town.

When heading to town you have to walk across the runway to the “airport” and you have to dodge goats and watch out for the barking (chained) dogs. We have a great walk of about a mile and a half into town and stop into Maxine’s. It is locked and we head to the back of the store where she and others are cleaning conch. Seems they dry the conch and send it overseas to as it is an aphrodisiac of sorts. Who knew? Oh well if it brings in some money for this town, that is great.

With nothing in the refrigerator, I checked the shelves for anything I might need and ended up just buying more rice. My $5 contribution to the community. Maxine said she did not order much from the mailboat as she would be out of town due to a death in the family.....so there is no one to man the shop.

We head down the road for a beer and club soda before making the hike back to the shore where we have left the dinghies. With the impending storms heading in, we call it a day and retreat to dinner and a little reading before calling it a night.
