Goodbye St Augustine

07 December 2020 | Rockhouse Creek, Ponce De Leon Inlet
glenda groome
A venue you could easily spends weeks, even a month or so exploring, but it is time to pull up and move. We have met up with John and Joanne on No Limits and their friends Scott and Jan on Tortuga. We all departed ahead another system approaching to get a little further south.

We pulled in at Ponce De Leon inlet while playing dodge with about 30 or more runabouts that were out fishing. When it is a big boy....we steer clear and he is typically not in the channel. However the runabouts are anchored on the edge of the channel with their lines in the channel. No one was throwing any fish our way so we just pushed forward and had our horn ready to blast if one decided to stray into our path. It is a narrow channel but everyone cooperated and the entertainment value was priceless. Yes if you like to people watch, this is entertaining! You have the one guy who pulls in a huge fish and the entire entourage of 30 plus boats all want to pull up anchor and head to that spot. You can imagine the discussions on the boats and see them pointing to what appears to be the “spot”.

Once in we need to find a place to drop the anchor. No Limits has directed us to Rockhouse Creek. The anchorage is small but there is room for at least 3 or 4 boats. We pull all the way to the back where the deep waters shallow pretty quickly. We had a runabout fly by on our port side only to get stuck in the sand. We adjust a bit but are rocking with 11 foot under the keel. We will sit it out here and enjoy the quiet of the anchorage.
