With a three night passage on the Atlantic from Saint Augustine to Moorehead City, we brought Ti Amo into the Intra Coastal Waterway and anchored in Goose Creek off the Pamlico River. We knew we wanted to keep moving and the weather on the ocean was not sounding too favorable so we would continue our journey to the Alligator River and make our next decision.
It did not take long after hearing weather reports that we were not anxious to transverse the Currituck Sound with gale force winds. We elected rather than sit a day or two, we would travel the Dismal Swamp Canal.
Wow! What an adventure! Two locks and a couple of bridges, several feeder lakes and bumps under the keel. What's not to like? Oh I forgot to mention that you are driving through the overhanging trees as the canal is so narrow. When you hit one (as we did) it is like having our wonderful Urbanna osprey dropping sticks on your deck. Pick you poison. The lock and bridge tenders are phenomenal and I would love to sit down with one and talk about the history of this canal. It is only a little over twenty miles long, but it keeps you alert and on your toes as you watch your depth meter (or not).
We are in Virginia.....we already feel like we are home.
