A Day to Chat N Chill

25 January 2020 | Chat N Chill Beach, Exumas, Bahamas

The morning cruisers net is held on VHF channel 72 and is comprised of many parts. Our anchor or announcer is Bill on sailing vessel Charisma. Bill hails from Deltaville Virginia and keeps his boat in Fishing Bay Marina. So each morning the net begins with emergency traffic, followed by announcements from local businesses, boaters who need help, boaters that have things to buy, sell or trade and then a kids corner for kids to make their own announcements. It is usually a thirty to forty minute presentation and while sometimes it gets to be a bit lengthy, there is usually something that will peak your interest. For us it would be the seminar that is being held on Chat N Chill Beach today on anchoring, tying a bowline knot and a question and answer session with the gentleman that lost his mast while out sailing last week near Emerald Bay Resort.

With the lecture due to start at 2, Greg and I take Jaxon on a dinghy ride through the hurricane holes to see what boats are moored back there. It is amazing how many boats are back there that have not been moved for a couple of years.

Jaxon and I then head to the beach to meet up with our friends Vicky and Ruby. Ruby is a border terrier and loves to chase her balls. Jaxon met Ruby last year and was quite timid......this year it took a bit of doing but he finally started to warm up to chasing Ruby up and down the beach and even into the water a couple of times. Totally exhausted and sandy, Jaxon is back at Ti Amo and down for the count.

Greg and I head in to the beach for our lecture series. Anchoring in the Bahamas is different than anchoring in the Chesapeake, no doubt and to listen to the number of boats that drag in the storms, it is always good to have this type presentation. Our host was Roland from Baliero. He and his wife Elizabeth have been giving this presentation for a bit now and have a pretty good system put together. Next would be learning to tie a bowline knot fast and easy. That was another good session at least for me and then the gentleman from Bliss II gave us his story about the demasting of his boat. One thing we will add to our boat are bolt cutters as that was what actually allowed him to free the boat of the mast that was in the water along with the sails. Long story that I am sure Greg will share with anyone that has questions.

Back at the boat we see a rainbow and soon thereafter there is the sunset. Time for dinner and planning tomorrows adventures.
