Pontooning Tavernier Creek

With Jen's arrival late, we are up earlier than I am sure she would have hoped to get our rental car returned (with her help). When she and Greg returned we all get showered and dressed for one of the nicest afternoons in the Keys.

Ed, Mari-Etta and Good Girl Pearl had invited us to go on their pontoon boat for a tour of Tavernier from the water. Tavernier Creek is the body of water that separates Key Largo from Islamorada. We enjoyed seeing the different areas and the ever famous "Toilet Seat Pass". Yes you heard me correctly....goggle it. The channel between Tavernier and Islamorada is referred to as Toilet Seat Channel. It literally is a bunch of toilet seats attached to PVC pipes that are then placed in the water as channel markers. They say at first it started with just a few.....now I would say there are at least fifty or more.

Our tour brings us to Hog Heaven where will enjoy a rather delicious lunch. I had the peel and eat shrimp with a side of Key West street corn. Mari-Etta tried the sliders and everyone else did the grouper tacos. No one was disappointed except maybe Jaxon and Pearl. The two of them kept getting tangled under the table trying to find the scrap that might drop.

Off we go again towards home. The wind has picked up a bit but this chariot is doing 15 knots and it is a most comfortable ride. We pass under the bridge know as Snake Creek Bridge and watch the pelicans sitting atop the barrier. They are like statues.....not moving.

We wind our way back to Tavernier Creek and have to go around Tavernier Cay on the outside as it is too shallow at low tide to pass through. Mari-Etta and Ed told us that Tavernier Cay on the weekends at low tide have boaters and swimmers all around. It is the happening spot to be on the weekend and I equate that to Little Bay or the point at Urbanna's harbor entrance.

Within moments we are coming back down the canal to Heart Harbor where Ti Amo awaits us. We help Ed get the pontoon up on the davits and we then head "home" to make our plan for dinner. None of us are real hungry but we force ourselves to have dinner at Snappers. It was a lovely venue but we should have gone earlier so Jen could appreciate the view. Lessons learned along the way.

Then there is tomorrow.
