Lots of Rain

We left Solomoms and headed north to St Michaels. St Michaels is another on of those charming towns in the Chesapeake that we always wanted to stop at but never found the time. We anchored close to the marina so we had a short dinghy ride into town. Our first day was real nice however our next 2 days [...]

Our Journey Home

Our crossing went well if you like 7 foot seas that make the boat roll and roll. Lunch consisted of crackers and humus. After a 10 hour sail. Yes we could sail. We landed in Ft Pierce. Spent almost a week in Vero Beach. While we were in Marsh Harbor a girlfriend that I hadn't seen in 20 years approached [...]

Great Sailing

Today we had a great sail from Great Sail Cay to West End. We sailed most of the morning at about 7 knots with a north wind. Wind died down in the afternoon which turned out great as we need a high tide coming through Indian Cay. Our 6 foot draft has made many of our sailing days a challenge in the [...]

Lubers to Hope Town

The weather this past week was nearly perfect. Although there were a few days we would have liked a bit more wind for sailing. We started the week off with a sail to Lubbers Quarters. A small island just west of Elbow Cay. We had lunch at Cracker P’s and spent the rest of the afternoon walking [...]

THE BERRY'S. GREAT HARBOR CAY

THE BERRY'S. GREAT HARBOR CAY

In Coconut Grove there is a cruisers net every day on the VHF radio at 8 am. It informs us of weather, tides, happenings and people that have arrived and those that are leaving. This is where we met Phil and Susan aboard a 42 foot Irwin. They were also hoping to cross the Gulf Stream. Yeah, a buddy boat. On Tuesday 2/17 we finally had a small weather window to cross. After waiting for a morning squall to pass we headed out. They travel at a much slower speed than us so we held back and we're still able to arrive just before sunset. We chose not to go into Bimini this year and we anchored on the north/west side just south of North Rock. It was a bit of a rock and roll night but we were up at first light (just like Ed) and we crossed the Bahama Bank to the Berry Islands stopping in Great Harbor. The reviews for Great Harbor Marina were all unbelievable. Most say they came for a night and stayed a week. Or they came for a week and stayed a month. We were planning on staying 2-3 nights. First day I was wondering what the hype was. We were facing condos on one side of the harbor and trees on the other side. Then it happens. The marina has many activities to get involved in. Thursday is pizza night, Monday is pot luck, exercise on M,W &F. Yoga T,Th &Sa. The staff is extremely accommodating. Free bikes too. Beaches are amazing. Beautiful shells and an abundance of conch. It's something to hear all those conch blowers at happy hour. So we have been here a week as of today. I know it's been a week because our second night here was pizza night. Yesterday we did a mini triathlon. Biked to the beach. Walked/swam to this little island then hiked the island looking for shells and a monument at the top. Did I mention how the other boaters staying here are super friendly? I could spend a month here. There is also a huge club that was quite famous back in the 70's. It is now in ruins and you can still walk through it and you can tell it was spectacular in it's day. We were told the Rat Pack ( Sinatra,Davis Jr., ect) spent much time here but apparently there were plans to build a casino and when that didn't happen many people left. There is also a 9 hole golf course. Free.
Jack Nickolaus arrive while we were here on his 112 foot Westport. He comes in from West Palm to go bone fishing. He clearly does not come to golf.
Life is good
