Sail Plan to Roatan

25 March 2021 | Frontares
Robert Starbird
Friday we will motor from Frontares to Cayo Quemodo where we'll prep for offshore. We will sail from Livingston Guatemala to Honduras early next week. Many boats are traveling this week and we will look for a buddy boat to passage with Can Can - Tom and Kristie AKA La Favorita. Our visa expires April 5th so we must leave Guatemala before then. We will check out of Livingston Monday morning March 29 and either start our passage or move across the bay to Tres Puntas or Bahia de Graciosa and anchor and wait for favorable weather. The full moon is March 28th, Sunday. Wind is from the East and backing to the Northeast and clocking to the Southeast. We will wait for the night winds to relax to less than 15 knots. Lately night wind is pulsing between 20 and 30 knots in the evening. Current predictions are for lighter winds Monday and Tuesday nights. Our start time will depend upon favorable weather. We will arrive in Roatan French Harbor, 135 Nautical miles or 27 hours later; or, Utila, 110 Nautical miles or 22 hours later.

2.1.2021 Terry and I are returning to Guatemala February 4th on a 6 AM BWI flight through Orlando and arriving Guatemala City at noon. We are looking forward to seeing friends, assessing the storm damage to the Gypsy Wife (hopefully, there won't be any) and escaping the North America winter. I received my second COVID 19 vaccination shot two days ago, Feb 2ed, and now I hope Terry can get hers soon so we feel a little protected. We are both looking forward to a day when we can all gather in the backyard BBQ, dance, sing and hug like the old days.

Castillo de San Felipe and Denny's Beach

Saturday 2.8.2020 we sailed with friends, Mike and Steve, on their boat Nightbreeze about 15 miles to Denny's Beach. On the chart picture you see San Felipe the start at the top and Punta Brava at the bottom, the finish. The sail took about three hours. The wind was on the beam or behind all the way down which made for a great sail. Absolutely beautiful sunshine and light winds.

On arrival we went to shore for a local fish and burrito dinner and a few beers. Later watched the full moon rise. Sunday the wind shifted to the west and made a perfect sail back. We made the distance again in about 3 hours and stopped at the Castillo de San Felipe which has been restored. It was established in 1651. Some pictures of the day are in the San Felipe photo album.

Gypsy Wife is docked in Frontaras, Rio Dulce this month. We're working to complete sailing preparations and expect to push off in February.

While I would like to sail the Honduran Bay Islands this spring - Isla de Utila, Roatan, Guanaja, Cayos Conchinos - I think we'll head to Belize initially.

Francois Cloutier, Terry Thielen, and Suzanne Lefebvre and I explore Monasterio de Santo Domingo in Antigua.
