s/v Gypsy Wind

We are preparing our 40 year old Tartan "TOCK" 41 for an extended cruise. The plan is to leave So. California for Mexico and the Sea of Cortez, first. Eventually, we would like to sail east, to Florida and cruise there, the Bahamas, and do the ICW.

Murray the Monitor

29 June 2011 | Aboard s/v Gypsy Wind
MEB
In the photos of the boat, you may have noticed that she is fitted with a Monitor windvane. This is, by far, my favorite piece of gear on the boat (besides my SCUBA unit). It works perfectly, and steers the boat when no one else, me included, wants to drive. Like all windvane gear, the harder the wind blows, the stronger it gets. Beats the electronic auto-steering hands down. Just keep the sails balanced, and it will steer beautifully.

This crewmember works tirelessly, and never needs to use the head and doesn't drink my beer. I have named him Murray (you know, as in Murray the Monitor). Installing this thing was a pretty big job, but it was straight-forward enough. The hardest part was drilling the first hole in the transom. I probably called Scanmar, the company that sells these things, a dozen times before drilling that first hole! But, after the first one, the rest of the holes were easy!
