Love in an Elevator
17 July 2014

Thursday morning we finally bid farewell to Peterborough and headed for the liftlocks. Liftlocks differ from regular locks in that there are 2 very large containers full of water that carry the boats up and down, vs. flooding chambers and raising or lowering water levels. In effect, very large elevators. Ironically, we touched bottom 3 times as we headed into the locks, which you would think would have plenty of depth with the lock cruise boats that operate in the area. BTW, in case you didn't know, Peterborough is the Indian word which translates to "we can't count to 5"! (which is the minimum amount of water supposedly in the system from end to end, and coincidentally how much water Haida Legend draws.)
The photo shows a shot off the stern looking out of the end of the lock chamber 60+ feet in the air. Kinda weird!!
Sam's dad Bob also came by for a visit as with a lot of pleading and eyelash batting by the admiral, managed to get him onto the boat after we had entered the lock. This actually got the lock attendant in a bit of trouble as he got chewed out by the head elevator operator over the PA system. (I felt a little bit vindicated after the latest grounding) We ended the day at Young's Point and Finn had fun playing with his frisbee and showing off for everyone around, He has taken to laying out in the sun on the foot matt as we work through the locks. So he now as yet another alias and is also know as the Welcome Mutt.
