It's All Downhill From Here

19 July 2014
Today's trip takes us to the Kirkfield Liftlocks and the highest point on the Trent Severn system. The locks are similar to the Peterborough locks only not quite as high. The other interesting thing is that seeing as we are now going downstream, the channel markers are now reversed with red now being on the port (left) side. This takes a bit of getting used to at first.

We traversed the locks intending to spend the night on the wall on the low end so we could get an early start in the morning. Unlike Peterborough, where we bounced on the bottom going into the lock, we grounded out at the wall as we tried to tie up. Just muck on the bottom but still caused us to move the boat onto the Blue Line (the place you wait when you are going into the lock) after the locks closed for the evening. The attached photo shows us parked in the exact same place we were 4 years earlier with our other boat Whippet, when we were taking it to Lake Ontario from Simcoe. (no groundings in that boat as it only drew 4'

We were invited to a couple's boat for a drink after dinner. We had originally met them in Peterborough. Hugh and Nickie are a couple from Goderich Ontario and live aboard the 45' Trawler they built....from scratch...from plans! It took them 8 years but the boat is beautiful and has all the comforts of home. They have had some wonderful adventures and kept us very entertained for the entire evening. They also did their best to try and convert us to Trawler people. We certainly are meeting some very interesting people on this trip.
