It's the End OF The World As We Know It

28 July 2014
Weather forecast is calling for 35+ knot winds and as we have to cross open water for our next leg of the journey on Georgian Bay we elected to stay for a 2nd day in Britt and immerse ourselves in the culture here. And, in the interest of accuracy and responsible journalism, I must correct a statement I made on yesterday's blog. There are only, in fact, 2 businesses in operation now in Britt. The Britt Inn went out of business in 2009 leaving only the 2 marina operations left in business. On the plus side, if you want
to buy a cottage or a house here, there are many abandoned and with all the self help TV fixer upper shows on TV, you could have yourself a real mansion for a fraction of the cost of new.

Britt is a community in the Canadian province of Ontario, located in the unincorporated township of Wallbridge in the Parry Sound District.
The community is located on the north shore of the Magnetawan River at Byng Inlet, approximately five kilometres west of Highway 69, at the end of Highway 526.
Like its neighbouring community of Byng Inlet on the south shore, Britt was originally a sawmill village, known as Byng Inlet North when the Burton Mill located there in 1880. As the lumber industry in this area had reached its peak, prior to the building of the CPR between 1903 and 1908, the community on the north shore was established as a port for receiving coal, required for the railway's steam locomotives. It was after this, that Byng Inlet North was renamed Britt for Thomas Britt, the CPR Superintendent of Fuels.
The community is not an incorporated municipality, but part of Unorganized Centre Part Parry Sound and is administered by a local services board.[1]

Now, as our luck would have it, we are just a bit too early in the season to be here for the major upcoming events:
-Britt Holy Family Slow Pitch Tournament Aug 2nd
-Kids free fishing from the town dock on Aug 10th from 2 pm (not sure what happens if you start before 2???
-Pike derby Aug 16th.

We did meet a very nice couple from Tiny Township on their Irwin 38 that just retired and moved to that area. So we had a nice chat with them in their cockpit over drinks getting the low down on properties in the area.
