You've Lost That Sinkin' Feeling

04 August 2014
Spent the night in Tobermory Harbour where there was lots of action! In case you don't know, Tobermory is the home of Fathom Five Underwater Park and is 1 major scuba destination because of all the shipwrecks in the vicinity. Thanks to a lot of skill (OK, technology via GPS and depth sounder) we managed not to add 1 more ship to the current list of wrecks.

Being a long weekend the place was hopping with tourists from all nationalities. There are thriving business ventures here taking tourists to places like Flowerpot Island and glassbottom boat tours to some of the more shallow wrecks in the area. There are also countless places that rent kayaks to people and turn them loose into the inner and outer harbour! I felt bad for some of these people because it was obvious they had no experience with boats. This is also the place where the car ferry to Manitoulin Island docks so there is real potential for tragedy here!

We had a nice chat with the couple docked beside us in a 2013 Sun Odyssey 44. It looked like it just came out of the showroom. They purchased it in Port Credit and sail out of Sarnia. They were extremely interested on our Trent portion of our journey and the the customer mast supports we used as they are planning to take their boat south in the winter of 2015 and will need to carry their mast on their deck for the Erie Canal portion of their trip. They were also having starter battery issues which I would not be happy about on a year old boat!

Re-provisioned the boat from the local grocery store and surprisingly, the prices were quite reasonable. Finn was happy to get ashore and we took him for a long walk to stretch his legs.
