Whose Land Is It Anyway?
07 August 2014

Anchored in a nice spot in Melville Sound called Sydney Bay for the night, north of Wiarton and south of Lion's Head. The land here is part of the Cape Croker, recently named Nayausheeng, First Nations Reserve. We have a 300' bluff on 1 side of the bay which makes for a very dramatic anchorage.
We went ashore to inspect the local plant population with Dinghy Dog at the camp ground and ran into a very friendly native named Owen. He is a member of the reserves fire fighter team and was telling us his life history. He grew up in Toronto and spent a lot of his life working with native youth in the city. His personal history painted a very disadvantaged upbringing but he was 1 of the most positive, optimistic people I have ever met.
He now spends his time with the youth of the reserve trying to provide guidance and be a driving force to motivate them to make something of themselves and their lives. Who would have thought you'd run into someone with this kind of a story just taking your dog for a squirt? We're adding Owen to our book of interesting people we have met on this trip.
As for the anchorage, the water was fairly warm and Chris and Justine went paddleboarding and swimming. Again we're becalmed so we continue to run up the hours on the trusty Yanmar.
